Equality & Diversity

Institutional action for equal opportunities, inclusion and a safe, respectful research environment.

Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion

ICMAB works to ensure that everyone can learn, contribute and lead in an environment based on equal opportunities, inclusion and mutual respect.

Equality and diversity are part of institutional quality. They guide how the Institute develops policies, supports its community and integrates inclusive perspectives into research and innovation.

  • Equal opportunities

Supporting fair participation, professional development and access to decision-making.
  • Inclusive community

Recognising diversity and promoting a workplace in which every person is respected.
  • Responsible research

Encouraging the integration of gender and inclusion perspectives into research and innovation.
Action Plan for Equality and Inclusion at ICMAB

Action Plan for Equality and Inclusion (PLA3I)

PLA3I translates ICMAB’s commitment into specific institutional action.

The Action Plan for Equality and Inclusion was developed by the Gender Equality and Diversity Committee and approved by the Institute Board on 14 November 2024.

It establishes actions tailored to ICMAB within—and beyond—the general framework of the CSIC III Equality Plan, positioning the Institute among Spanish research centres pioneering equality and inclusion in a broad sense.

Gender Equality and Diversity Committee

The Committee coordinates institutional work on gender equality, diversity and inclusion at ICMAB.

Established in 2016 within the framework of the Severo Ochoa Excellence Programme, it brings together representatives from research, students, technical staff and administration.

Its work has included actions to strengthen equal opportunities, increase the visibility of women scientists, promote inclusive governance, improve work–life balance and make equality resources accessible to the ICMAB community.

In 2018, ICMAB received the first CSIC Certificate of Equality (Distintivo de Igualdad), recognising the collective involvement of the Institute in equality policies and positive-action measures.

Why equality in research and innovation?

Equality supports research excellence by allowing all talent to flourish and by improving the relevance of scientific knowledge and innovation.

Inclusive teams and fair opportunities foster creativity, broaden perspectives and strengthen scientific progress. Integrating sex, gender and intersecting dimensions into research design can also produce more robust and socially relevant results.

Equality, diversity and inclusion at CSIC

ICMAB’s work is connected to the wider equality framework of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

CSIC created its Women and Science Committee in 2002 and its Delegate Committee for Equality in 2011. Equality committees across CSIC institutes help translate institutional policies into everyday practice.

The CSIC III Equality Plan, approved on 1 April 2022, defines 49 actions across seven strategic areas, including work–life balance, professional development and the gender perspective in research content. CSIC also maintains institutional protocols for preventing and addressing workplace and sexual harassment.
