Technology Portfolio
Explore ICMAB technologies with potential for licensing, co-development and industrial collaboration.
Research results ready for new collaboration routes
The ICMAB Technology Portfolio brings together research results with potential for licensing, co-development and further validation with external partners.
This first version presents two technologies in biomedical imaging and energy storage. The directory has been structured so it can later be connected to a dynamic Joomla source and expanded with individual technology pages.
Two application areas
Health
Metal-free nanovesicles for MRI contrast.
Energy
A hybrid supercapacitor combining high energy density and high power.
Explore the technology portfolio
Select a technology to review the industrial need, the proposed solution, its advantages and potential applications.
Nanovesicles as MRI contrast agents
Next-generation metal-free MRI contrast agents based on Quatsome-type nanovesicles loaded with stable organic radicals.
Hybrid supercapacitor with high energy density
An asymmetric supercapacitor device designed to combine high energy density, high power and long cycle life.
Nanovesicles as MRI contrast agents
Next-generation metal-free MRI contrast agents based on Quatsome-type nanovesicles loaded with stable organic radicals.
The challenge
Gadolinium-based contrast agents are essential in magnetic resonance imaging, but they can accumulate in tissues and may cause serious complications in patients with renal impairment. Their use in repeated analyses is also limited because cumulative exposure increases the risk of retention and toxicity.
The technology
A metal-free Quatsome-type nanovesicle platform incorporating stable nitroxyl radicals. The nanovesicles accommodate a high radical payload while maintaining paramagnetic activity, resulting in enhanced MRI contrast efficiency.
Advantages
- Metal-free alternative to gadolinium-based agents.
- Improved stability and extended lifetime of nitroxyl radicals.
- High radical loading capacity per nanovesicle.
- Simple and reproducible production method.
- Adaptable platform for a wide range of biomedical imaging applications.
Hybrid supercapacitor with high energy density
An asymmetric supercapacitor device designed to combine high energy density, high power and long cycle life.
The challenge
The transition to renewable energy and electrification is increasing demand for energy-storage systems that combine high power with high energy density. Lithium-ion batteries offer high energy density but charge and discharge slowly and depend on critical raw materials. Conventional supercapacitors provide rapid, high-power operation, but their lower energy density and fabrication cost limit energy-intensive applications.
The market needs high-energy-density supercapacitors based on abundant raw materials for grid stabilisation, rail transport, EV fast charging, industrial equipment starting and electric aviation.
The technology
A new asymmetric supercapacitor with increased energy density while preserving high power and long cycle life. Its electrodes combine porous carbon matrices with metal oxides, providing high surface-to-volume ratios and redox reactions in hybrid electrodes.
The final electrode-fabrication step uses pulsed-laser processing. Both aqueous and organic electrolytes can be used.
Advantages
- Higher energy density than conventional supercapacitors while maintaining high power.
- Fabricated from abundant, non-critical raw materials.
- Up to 50% lower fabrication cost per Wh.
- Up to 50% lower production energy per Wh.
- Compatible with safer aqueous electrolytes.
- Long cycle life validated in laboratory prototypes (>30,000 cycles).
Potential applications
- Grid stabilisation.
- Rail transport.
- EV fast charging.
- Industrial equipment starting.
- Electric aviation.
