Sustainability Committee

Coordinating practical action to reduce ICMAB’s environmental impact and embed sustainability in everyday institutional activity.

Sustainability Committee | ICMAB-CSIC

Reducing ICMAB’s environmental impact

The ICMAB Sustainability Committee was established in May 2023 to reduce the Institute’s environmental impact across its areas of activity. It brings together staff from across ICMAB to turn environmental responsibility into practical institutional action.

The former page recorded 16 members organised into four working groups. Current membership is presented dynamically below and should be treated as the authoritative source whenever the composition changes.

The Committee is open and participatory: every ICMAB staff member is invited to join its activities or contribute to the working groups.

Four areas for collective action

The Committee’s work is organised through four complementary groups that connect awareness, measurement and operational improvements.

Outreach

Raise awareness and encourage participation in more sustainable everyday practices.

Resources Quantification

Support the assessment and monitoring of resource consumption and environmental impact.

Waste Management

Promote waste reduction, responsible separation, reuse and recycling practices.

Sustainable Laboratories

Advance more sustainable laboratory practices and responsible use of scientific resources.

Sustainability Plan at ICMAB

Approved in May 2024, the strategic plan structures the Institute’s sustainability action around three main areas designed to reduce environmental impact and promote responsible resource use.

General Objectives

  • Assess and monitor ICMAB’s environmental impact and benchmark it against similar institutions.
  • Raise awareness about resource consumption among staff and researchers.
  • Communicate practices for reducing energy, water and material use.
  • Share actions and improvements with the broader community.

Sustainability Within ICMAB

  • Minimise water consumption across laboratories and facilities.
  • Optimise energy use, including laboratory equipment and computational resources.
  • Reduce, reuse and recycle materials to minimise waste.
  • Adopt eco-friendly chemicals and greener synthesis routes whenever possible.

External Initiatives

  • Reduce the environmental impact of commuting and work-related travel.
  • Promote sustainable purchasing and reduce the carbon footprint of procurement.
  • Communicate relevant ICMAB work to a broader audience.
  • Engage in local initiatives that support a greener scientific ecosystem.
World Bicycle Day and sustainable campus mobility initiative at ICMAB

Awareness and sustainable mobility

The Committee has promoted awareness of water use, sustainability in laboratories, car sharing, public transport and recycling.

For sustainable transport, it organised a presentation of the UAB Campus Mobility Plan and a World Bicycle Day activity. Participants guided and demonstrated routes for reaching the centre by bicycle.

Understanding waste management

The Committee also arranged a visit to an urban waste management facility so participants could see how urban waste is processed.

These initiatives connect institutional planning with practical knowledge and encourage the ICMAB community to participate in environmental improvements.
