Digital foundations for research and institutional operations

The ICMAB IT Service oversees computer systems, data networks, internal software and the institute’s digital presence, ensuring that digital services effectively support researchers and management staff.

Its role combines strategic planning, infrastructure operation, user support and protection of institutional systems and communications.

Objectives of the IT Service

Plan

Develop and implement strategic action plans for information technology and communications at ICMAB.

Provide

Deliver the tools and infrastructure required for the institute’s computing needs.

Build and maintain

Design, install and maintain computer systems and the institutional data network.

Support software

Deploy, manage and support specialised software for administrative and research purposes.

Operate computing services

Oversee the functionality of the institute’s distributed computing services.

Protect

Maintain the reliability, integrity and security of data, systems and communications.

Responsibilities of the IT Service

From connectivity and secure access to software, devices and direct user support, the Service maintains the digital environment required for research and administration.

Networks

Connectivity

Management of wired and wireless infrastructure, including Eduroam, the ICMAB network and guest access.

Systems and servers

Core infrastructure

Administration of computer systems, email services, web servers and distributed computing services.

VPN

Remote access

Maintenance of secure remote access to ICMAB computing services.

Telephony and PBX

Communications

Administration of virtual PBX servers, the dedicated telephony network and physical and virtual terminals.

IT security

Protection

Passive and active security measures, firewall rules and continuous antivirus and anti-malware updates.

Scientific software

Research infrastructure

Management of the server infrastructure required for scientific software applications.

IT procurement

Purchasing support

Hardware and software purchasing, including preparation of the necessary documentation.

User support

Staff assistance

Operational assistance for researchers and management staff facing IT-related issues.

Hardware maintenance

Devices and equipment

Maintenance of servers, network equipment and personal computing devices, including PCs and laptops.

Connected, protected and remotely accessible

The IT Service operates wired and wireless connectivity through Eduroam, ICMAB and guest networks, while VPN services provide secure remote access to institutional computing resources.

Security responsibilities include firewall management and active and passive safeguards, together with continuous antivirus and anti-malware updates.

Telephony services cover virtual PBX servers, the dedicated telephone network and both physical and virtual terminals.

Operational support for the ICMAB community

The Service assists staff with IT-related issues, maintains servers, network equipment, PCs and laptops, and supports specialised software used in administration and research.

It also manages IT procurement for hardware and software, including preparation of the required purchasing documentation.

Scientific software infrastructure

The IT Service manages the servers needed to run scientific software applications and supports the computing environment behind research activity.
